Solution to The Mlystery Hunt, as Told By a Thief of the Bases

Reference Point

Answer: BOB LEMON
by Jen McTeague and Steve Kaltenbaugh

This is a cleverly disguised puzzle about Blaseball, the best fake sport. In particular, the videos are done in the style of the Blaseball Roundup, a series of videos put out by The Game Band to describe what happened during the previous couple seasons. The videos in this puzzle are โ€œwhat wouldโ€™ve happened if the Mystery Hunt did Blaseball-style roundups.โ€

Throughout the four videos, there are eight streams of information. Each stream of information corresponds to one of the eight sets of additional blanks (or other information) underneath the videos. Each stream also has an extraction method which produces a phrase with one additional letter. Each of these phrases describes another one of the streams of information, creating a loop. Take the extra letters for each of the loops to get the answer BOB LEMON.

Data Stream 1 - Stadium Modifications

This stream involves the props that show up in the video. In each year, the Thief brings one prop into view, and a number appears on screen. Look up the modification that the prop refers to, and index by the number to get STATSMPICTIONARY.

(The note is to push people away from the Renovations page, which has some things, but not others.)

Data Stream 2 - Attribute Pictures

Every player has a series of attributes with interesting names. These attributes are clued by drawings on the whiteboard and referenced one per year. Figure out the attribute that each picture represents, and index by the number of players in that picture to get UNICODECHOAMPIONS.

Data Stream 3 - Champion Logos

In each year, the Thief presents the winner and loser of the Endgame of that Hunt. The winners have their logos displayed on the whiteboard - and each of those logos is a valid Unicode emoji. The losers are all clues for actual Blaseball teams, and were the ones to lose the Internet Series in that season. Taking the emoji of the actual winner, finding its number on the given page, and subtracting it from the number of the videoโ€™s champion, you get a series of numbers from 1-26. Converting the alphanumerics you get DECREENICONINDEX

Data Stream 4 - Static Icons

Each time the video cuts to static, a black bar with icons on it shows up. These icons were taken from the list of all Decrees, successful or not. Identify the decrees, then index into them by the number of times the icon shows up on the black bar. This gets you the string HALLBOFFLAMENAME.

Data Stream 5 - Player Names

Throughout the four videos, twenty different Hunters are named. Each of the Hunters are letter changes on a Blaseball player. While the players are just used in order, they are also the first 20 players to enter the Hall of Flame due to being incinerated. Take the added letter to each name to spell out BETARAYCARRIEOPOSTER.

Data Stream 6 - Red String Matchups

On the whiteboard in each video there is a series of numbers connected by red string. Each strand of red string has a word written along it. Each one of these words corresponds to one of the matchup posters done by @betaraycarrie. Take the two teams corresponding to that matchup, and make a chain. Each team will then correspond to a number. Index into the full name of the team to get SEASONSUBTBITLES.

Data Stream 7 - Season Subtitles

Data Stream 8 - Blaseball History

First, solve the trigrams. Each of the trigrams involves an event from Blaseballโ€™s history (which explains why there are words such as EARLSIESTA and UNDERBRACKET in it). Each of these events is also described in one year of the video, although maybe not using the same exact words. Find the Blaseball event for each year, and then find out what season it happened in. Take the letters corresponding to the seasons to spell out STADIUEMUPGRADES.

Authors' Note

I mean, cโ€™mon. We had to have a Blaseball puzzle, right?

It only made sense for a subject as chaotic as Blaseball to have a puzzle that was equally as chaotic. We spent a lot of time making the puzzle doable by folks who have never seen Blaseball before this. Part of this was to introduce people whoโ€™ve never seen it before to Blaseball, and part of this is because all of the people who are familiar with Blaseball on Palindrome were authors of the puzzle, and we needed testsolvers.

We hope that you liked the deep dive into Blaseball lore. Go Pies, Crabs, and Magic!
