Quandle

by Alex Irpan

Answer:
MOUNT WARIO

It's Quantum Wordle!

More specifically, each user on the team has an independently running Wordle game. On each guess, instead of getting feedback like "absent, present in wrong location, or present in right location", we get a probability distribution of feedback, like "40% absent, 34% present in wrong location, 26% correct". In other words, we're solving against a superposition of multiple target words. With some exploration, we can find there are 50 words, since the probabilities are always multiples of 2%.

Each game comes with two "eyes", or two observations. When viewing the distribution for a single letter, we can choose to observe a specific outcome for that letter. This will make some target words impossible. To solve the Quandle, we need to use the observations to restrict the possible outcomes to exactly 1 target word, then guess that target word. We should then repeat this process to find all 50 target words. The list of words found is shared across the team, and is provided in a given order, with either 1 or 2 green letters.

This is the superposition of two cluephrases:

COLLAPSE SUPERPOSITION OF WORDS WHERE SECOND TILE IS GREEN
COLLAPSE SUPERPOSITION OF WORDS WHERE FOURTH TILE IS GREEN

The words where the 2nd tile is green are

FLEET
FIEND
MIXED
BOXER
BLUER

and the words where the 4th tile is green are

TEMPO
HELPS
HARES
TIMID
WILED

Reading down the columns, we see that there is an exact letter that is most unlikely (unique) in that column. Reading these letters gives the answer MOUNT WARIO.

Authors' Notes

This puzzle was written almost directly after Mystery Hunt 2022, when Wordle was very hot, Dordle was gaining steam, and Quordle was just starting out. Shortly after implementation was done, we saw things like "solve 32 wordles at once" and have spent the rest of the year hoping this puzzle wouldn't get scooped. There were some close shaves like Qwordle and Quantle, but no direct copies.

Partial inspiration came from Quantum Minesweeper in Mystery Hunt 2016.
