Pluck the Petals

by Catherine Wu and Tracey Lin

Answer:
CORN STARCH

We are presented with a variety of flowers with some letters and numbers. Most of these flowers contain actual flowers, some contain other objects. We'll notice that:

  1. All flowers with the same number of petals have the same petal shape,
  2. When there are multiple flowers with a certain number of petals, these flowers will have a number ranging from 1-5 on one petal.
  3. If there is only a single flower of a certain number of petals, the flower will have no number printed on its petals.

This indicates to us that we should sort the flowers by the number of petals, then sub-sort them by the numbers that appear on their petals if relevant. Now we can read the letters that are printed on the petals to get AN ALPHABET OF FLORAL EMBLEMS.

After we search on Google, we'll find the book The Language of Flowers: An Alphabet of Floral Emblems[1]. Now, we can start correctly identifying flowers. As we identify, we notice that there is one flower that begins with each letter of the alphabet (except for X, as none exist in the book), which can help us identify letters. Using the number of petals, we can index into the flower meanings to get ANS THICKENER FROM RICHES TEN.

Going back to the book, we find that the only flower that means RICHES is corn. Our answer is a thickener made from corn, CORN STARCH.
