Answer:
TAIFUN

We are given links to 6 small collaborative crossword puzzles, as well as a final password-protected puzzle.

Upon opening a small crossword, we are given one of two anonymous animal identities (e.g. Lame Clam, Grim Dog, etc). As we solve, we notice that each anonymous animal can only type a subset of the 26 letters of the alphabet. For example, anyone logged in as Lame Clam can only type letters from the set AHMLSU. This restriction means we must work with our teammates (or at least in separate browsers) to collaborate and fill in each grid. We notice that there are some letters that cannot be typed by either animal, and the grids cannot ever be completed. Taking these untypeable letters in each grid gives the intermediate cluephrase PW IS NAME BACKWARDS (Appendix 1).

Two key insights are needed to proceed:

  • The flavortext describes the players as "monsters", and also mentions scarlet and violet, the names of the most recent Pokémon games. The anonymous animals also hint at Pokémon.
  • Some of the clues refer to things that are “local” (e.g. “The Neues is a local one” = MUSEUM), and we find that the location they are all themed around is Germany.

It turns out that these anonymous animals are not random, but the etymology of German Pokémon names, translated to English. For example, Lahmus (Slowbro in English) comes from lahm and Muschel, which translates to Lame Clam. The letters each animal can type are the letters that show up in their name (since Pokémon canonically can only say their names).

Using the letter banks and English translations, we can get the list of the 12 Pokémon used. Entering any of their German names backwards unlocks the final grid. (While one is sufficient to unlock, each password unveils only the letters in the crossword clue list that exist in the Pokémon’s name, and allows you to type only those letters.)

We notice the final criss-cross contains fairly long words, and that there are about twice as many clues as there are entries. After solving the crossword clues, we can observe that each side of the answers is sorted by German alphabetical order, which helps to disambiguate the harder clues. Following the compound word theme from the Pokémon names, we must first assemble the starts and ends into common German compound words, which are clued by their constituents (e.g. Glüh (glow) + Birne (pear) = Glühbirne (lightbulb)). Various listicles, or using an online dictionary that allows for searching by partial words such as https://dict.leo.org/, can help us match up the starts and ends. (See Appendix 2.)

Once we have assembled some of the words, we can fill the grid in with the German compound words. Note that letters with umlauts count as a single German letter when entered into the grid. As the grid is filled out, we can notice that the number of criss-cross entries is the same as the number of starts and ends if we include the single uncrossing entry at the bottom. Since there are 12 blanks in this entry, we can find after placing the other 12 letter words that it contains Wind (wind) + Schatten (shadow) = Windschatten (slipstream).

There is also an icon of a Pokéball next to the last entry, implying that we should look for a Pokémon. In the German version of the game, the Windschatten Pokémon is Elfun, which is the German equivalent of Whimsicott.

Finally, we can also read off the circled letters, which spell ZWEITES STAMMWORT (SECHS). This is German for “second root word” or “second stem word”, with “six” being the enumeration. The name Elfun comes from Elf + Taifun, so we should submit its second root word, TAIFUN.

Authors' Notes

Special thanks to the open-source collaborative crossword site Down for a Cross for letting us use a modified version of their website for this puzzle. The Pokémon as anonymous animals idea in particular references the randomly generated names on Down for a Cross.
