We are presented with grids reminiscent of dropquotes and the nonogram logic puzzle. Summing the numbers on the side exactly equals the number of blue letters, so we can start by dropping blue squares down as a nonogram. The third grid is a good place to start, and reveals that each blue area is in the shape of a giant letter (T in this case).

Unlike other puzzles, this puzzle appears to come with no title and a number of missing letters. By highlighting or changing the font color, we find that some letters are “invisible” on the page. Ignoring the blue cells and treating the white cells as spaces, we can solve the letters as dropquotes. We find that the “invisible” letters thematically are lyrics from Taylor Swift’s Blank Space.

Using this knowledge, we can then solve a second set of dropquotes for the blue letters, this time for different Taylor Swift songs and without spaces. (Here, a lyric search engine may come in handy.) There is only one extra twist: each lyric is missing a word.

To aid in solving, the given grids are sorted by release date (and by track listing, within an album). This also suggests we need to reorder by the order of the Blank Space lyrics, giving us these completed grids:

Red’s “Red”

TRYING TO SOLVE A CROSSWORD AND REALIZING THERES NO RIGHT ANSWER

We can now extract three sets of letters:

  • SWIFTSSCR (from the shape of the large blue letters)
  • LETLETTER (from the missing words, each of which clues a letter as seen in cryptic abbreviations)
  • ANSWERISA (from the letters in the red bordered cells)

The first two form the cluephrase “SWIFT’S SC?RLET LETTER”, and coupled with the last, suggest that the answer is in the final grid. Using the blank space letters, which we know to be in between the lyrics of the large C and R, we can figure out the shape of the final A. (The #'s on the side help disambiguate where the middle bar of the A begins.)

The last step is to fill in the lyrics. “Scarlet letter” appears in Love Story from Fearless. (The plural “scarlet letters” also appears in New Romantics, but the placement of this grid in the initial album ordering of the grids means we must find a song from Fearless or earlier.) As before, we remove the words from the lyrics, giving us the final multi-line answer:

Authors' Notes

This ridiculous answer first arose as a placeholder in order to test a meta idea. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the meta ended up more constrained than anticipated, and the answer stuck.

The album Midnights came out in the middle of one of our testsolves. Unbeknownst to them, we sneakily swapped out one of the grids for Anti-Hero while they were asleep. Their realization was a joy to witness.

Huge shout-out to shaynak, whose Taylor Swift search engine made this puzzle possible.
