Now I Know

by Andrew He and Edgar Chen

Answer:
OFFICE OF NAVAL INTELLIGENCE

We are presented with a list of images, separated by some spaces, as well as a list of images marked as "Unused". As suggested by the puzzle title ("Now I Know [My ABCs]") and the flavortext ("foreign land", "spelled out"), this puzzle is about a foreign language's alphabet; specifically, each image represents the name of a letter of the Thai alphabet. In the Thai alphabet, each of the 44 consonants is named after a Thai word which begins with or features that letter (this is an example of acrophony), while the 32 vowels are simply named "sara [vowel]" ("sara" translates to vowel in Thai). See Appendix for the full key.

There are a few possible break-ins to identify this particular foreign language:

  • Many of the pictures depict animals/objects which are from Thailand/Thai culture. For instance, the chicken is a Thai Game Chicken, and the headdress is a traditional Thai chada.
  • Most pictures representing vowels depict people named "Sara". Searching for foreign alphabet "sara" surfaces a few references to Thai.
  • The symbols drawn on Sara Canning are fragments of Thai letters.

Decoding the text gives the cluephrase "คำ ตอบ ของ ปริศนา นี้ คือ ชื่อ เต็ม ของ ออสการ์ พฤศจิกายน อินเดีย ใน สหรัฐอเมริกา หก สอง ห้า สิบสอง", which translates to "The answer to this puzzle is the full name of the Oscar November India in the United States (6 2 5 12)". This is referring to the US military's OFFICE OF NAVAL INTELLIGENCE (ONI).

Authors' Notes

This puzzle was originally conceived as a more generic puzzle about alphabets, but then we discovered the unique names of the Thai letters, and refocused the puzzle about Thai specifically.

At some point, when we were trying to get solvers to realize that the "Sara"s represented vowels, we discovered Sarah Vowell, voice of Violet Parr in The Incredibles. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a good way to fit her into the flavortext.

Appendix

Here is a complete listing of the Thai alphabet and its representation. A few general notes:

  • Consonants are just represented by their name.
  • Vowels named "sara [vowel(s)]" are represented by an image cluing a person named "Sara". The specific vowel corresponds to the set of vowels in their last name. The 4 special vowels "rue (short/long)" and "lue (short/long)" are just represented by people named Rue and Lue.
  • Vowels typically come in pairs of short and long vowel, differing only in the duration it is held. These are represented by the same image, marked with a "" or a "", respectively.
  • Vowels are sometimes written using multiple symbols, some of which may even come visually to the left of the consonant it follows. This puzzle always lists exactly 1 image per vowel (not per symbol), positioned in logical/speaking order. Additionally, some spoken vowels are implicit when writing and are omitted; we don't include those in the puzzle, so that transcription is more natural.
  • The Thai writing system uses a few additional diacritics: there are 4 tone markers (◌่ ◌้ ◌๊ ◌๋) and the "thanthakhat" (◌์) which represents a silent letter. These are denoted in the puzzle by a superscript T1-T4 and X, respectively.
