# Solution to Word Search of Babel

Answer: WRITE “NANCY DREW SOLVES A PUZZLE”
by Jen McTeague

Solvers may find some things in the word search that they recognize from casually looking, but a good place to start is the Scraps of Paper. Each of those are a set of coordinates in the Library of Babel, a website that contains every possible book 1,312,000 characters long. The very long string is the Hex number, followed by the Wall, Shelf, Volume, and Page numbers. Find the pages indicated by the scraps and there are… well… less meaningless than normal passages in the Library.

Meanwhile, searching through the grid reveals many different book titles. Combining information from the Scraps of Paper and the titles found in the grid, solvers should come to the conclusion that there are the first 12 books from each of 6 different series hidden in the grid, plus some additional words and a seventh mysterious page called “extraction.”

Six of the seven scraps of paper contain a clue to one of the six book series, along with a series of gibberish phrases that, when transformed by the note indicated on the seventh scrap, are the same length of the books in the series in order. Given that connection, the non-book titles hidden in the grid can be matched by length to the entries in the seventh scrap of paper. This gives the instructions LIBRARY OF BABEL/REPLACE ENTRIES IN THE GRID/GRID IS HEX/WALL FOUR/SHELF FOUR/VOLUME EIGHTEEN/PAGE ONE THIRTY SEVEN.

LIBRARY OF BABEL has already been used, so what does REPLACE ENTRIES IN THE GRID mean? Well, each entry found in the grid corresponds to a series of seemingly random characters the same length, so each entry can be replaced with its corresponding characters. Helping to confirm this, whenever two entries cross, the crossing letter is replaced with the same letter. This can be slightly tedious, and it can be hard to find errors, but the String Checker at the bottom will help solvers find errors if they’ve made small mistakes.

When that is done, the grid should look like this:

 3 8 j j 2 p i f d v l s 7 x 2 3 e b k k i 9 r d 0 j z 2 c j 1 u h x t m i i 3 e w q t 4 5 l 3 9 p 1 a q 1 l 9 z 5 r z u g 3 o l q 2 b i t d b w 2 o b v d d 4 b m s f y 4 5 b 0 1 w b g z s d a 7 h 3 g This is now a 3,254 character string of seemingly random letters – using what solvers have done earlier in the puzzle, this should hopefully remind them of the Hex numbers from the Scraps of Paper. Going to that hex, and then Wall 4, Shelf 4, Volume 18, Page 137 brings them to a page with only one sentence on it: WRITE NANCY DREW SOLVES A PUZZLE.
