In this round, all of the answers are ten letters long, and the puzzle titles are all listed next to a grid. Naturally, the first step is to place all of the answers in the grid:
R | O | U | G | H | I | N | G | U | P |
V | I | V | I | P | A | R | I | T | Y |
G | R | A | D | E | L | E | V | E | L |
T | H | I | N | K | I | N | G | O | F |
X | Y | R | E | C | O | R | D | E | R |
N | I | N | J | A | B | O | O | T | S |
D | A | T | A | B | A | C | K | U | P |
B | I | T | T | E | R | B | L | O | W |
M | A | S | S | M | A | T | R | I | X |
O | D | O | N | O | G | H | U | E | S |
H | Y | P | O | C | E | R | C | A | L |
5 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 1 | 7 | 6 |
The flavortext discusses “running up the field”, and it turns out that a word can be read upwards in each of the numbered columns: from left to right, they are POST, DIG, COMEBACK, CORNER, CURL, OUT, and FLY. Each of these is a route in American football.
When following a route, a receiver runs up the field for some length before turning and heading in a new direction (with the exception of fly, which is straight up the whole time). This suggests that we can do something similar with the letters in the grid: each route is read straight up, so from the last letter, we can move in the appropriate direction and take the letter found there. For example, the curl route involves running forward and then diagonally back towards the middle of the field, so within the grid we would move down and to the left from the L in CURL to get to a T. Note that we moved to the left because CURL is on the right half of the field.
Here is the grid with all of the routes colored and corresponding extracted letters bolded:
R | O | U | G | H | I | N | G | U | P |
V | I | V | I | P | A | R | I | T | Y |
G | R | A | D | E | L | E | V | E | L |
T | H | I | N | K | I | N | G | O | F |
X | Y | R | E | C | O | R | D | E | R |
N | I | N | J | A | B | O | O | T | S |
D | A | T | A | B | A | C | K | U | P |
B | I | T | T | E | R | B | L | O | W |
M | A | S | S | M | A | T | R | I | X |
O | D | O | N | O | G | H | U | E | S |
H | Y | P | O | C | E | R | C | A | L |
5 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 1 | 7 | 6 |
In the order of the given numbers, the “next” letters in the routes spell out the answer THE GAPS, something that certainly should be kept in “mind”!
