Teams should start by folding 12 origami pieces according to the instructions. They should label them with the red lines as given in the diagram. Numbers 1 and 6 are on the flaps of the piece, numbers 3 and 4 are on the pockets of the piece, and circled numbers 2 and 5 give the extraction. These pieces are the Sonobe unit of modular origami, though many of the constructions in the puzzle are original.

Answer 1: Since this is a modular origami problem (the pieces assemble by tucking flaps into pockets), teams should follow the instructions and label the pieces with the given numbers MOD 149. Some of the flaps and pockets will have the same number. If you assemble these together, you will get 2 shapes, each using 3 pieces. The remaining 6 pieces have all unique numbers on the flaps and pockets and are therefore not used. When you read the circled numbers along the red line of the first shape, taking the numbers from 1-26 as letters, you get MAYHEM. Note, you don't know the starting point of the word or the direction, but this is the only order which gives a word. This fits with the clue "COMPANY THAT MAKES ____ BAT", with answer WORTH.

The second shape has numbers 13, 15, 4, 1, 0, 1, which read in the same way gives MODA?A. Teams should realize that this has a zero, and therefore is unlikely to map exactly to letters. It follows the same pattern as the first MOD (since the instructions say you will find more along the way), and is MOD 101.

Answer 2: Take the pieces apart, take the numbers MOD 101 and reassemble. These numbers give 2 shapes, one of which uses 5 pieces and reads BALL OF WIND. This fits with clue "ANCIENT ROMAN ___", with answer FOLLIS. The second shape has 3 pieces and gives MOD 373.

Answer 3: Take the pieces apart, take the numbers MOD 373 and reassemble. These numbers give 2 shapes, one of which uses 6 pieces, looks like a box, and reads BOXING BIOPIC. This fits with clue "2001 ___", with answer ALI. The second shape has 3 pieces and gives MOD 241.

Answer 4: Take the pieces apart, take the numbers MOD 241 and reassemble. These numbers give 2 shapes, one of which uses 7 pieces and reads PACKERS QB FAVRE. This fits with clue "FIRST NAME OF ___", with answer BRETT. The second shape has 3 pieces and gives MOD 199.

Answer 5: Take the pieces apart, take the numbers MOD 199 and reassemble. These numbers give 1 shape using all 12 pieces. This reads OR ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG SITES, which fits with clue "WHAT THE TOYS WERE IN ___", with answer RUINS.

You've successfully reassembled the bear's ball, with five keeper answers WORTH, FOLLIS, ALI, BRETT, RUINS.
