Dr Ox's Experiment

One of Verne's short stories, "Dr. Ox's Experiment," is about a mad scientist who uses an entire town for his evil research. At the culmination of the story, Dr. Ox's associate Ygene tries to tell him that the experiment should be called off, but Ox refuses to listen and would end up incarcerated or worse if not for a freak accident at his factory. This cautionary tale just goes to show that listening to one's advisors is the seventeenth most important thing for a competent supervillain to keep in mind.
