Answer: TIMELINE'S END

This round features the characters from the long-running BBC series Doctor Who, the title character of which frequently "regenerates" in a manner that allows him to be played by different actors. Each Doctor also has a "Companion," an expository character who entertains the Doctor with his or her propensity to need rescuing. The round is introduced by the Tenth Doctor (that is, the tenth actor to play the Doctor) and his Companion, Martha Jones.

The round starts with eight puzzles that are broken in half. At the beginning of the round, you have eight "Doctor" puzzle-halves (matching the first eight Doctors) and three "Companion" puzzle-halves, unmatched to the Doctor halves. Uniting the Doctor and Companion answer creates a clue to an overall puzzle answer, which is what the teams call in. Each called-in answer fills in the pictures of the Doctor and Companion in question, and opens a new Companion half. After all Companion halves are opened, a new Ninth Doctor and Companion puzzle open, which is used to crack the metapuzzle. Following the instruction from the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler COMMENCING AT THE OORT CLOUD OPERATE HIS TARDIS ON INTERIOR BOARD, the answers to the assembled clues are placed in the grid from top to bottom in "Doctor order," from the First to the Eighth Doctor. The answers are:

Starting at the OO in the second row (the "Oort Cloud"), your ship can make a series of checkers jumps over kings (the "Royal Blackguards") ending at the I in the second row. Then you can shift up one row to the other OO to continue another run of six jumps of kings. This spells Ernie's location, TIMELINE'S END. (The fact that TIMELINES spelled backwards is SENILE MIT should not be taken as a compliment.)
