Picture Puzzle

The puzzle should first be solved as a normal "Some Assembly Required"-type jigsaw crossword, using logic to determine the shape and placement of the Pieces. Solution is shown below.

Solving this far allows placement of the pieces numbers in the grid, and fills in the unclued sample pieces: ANIMAL SHOWN. The reference to the suspect liking "easy" picture puzzles as well, along with the exaggerated periods in the sample Pieces, should suggest that the numbers form a dot-to-dot puzzle. Solving that (below) leads to a picture of a ZEBRA.
