Randall, unperturbed by the dead body, walks over and empties the man's pockets. No money, no identification, just stray bits of diginote. The diginote reader seems to have something wrong with it, flickering and whining like an old modem, and the content of the notes looks like nonsense. They must have been important enough to keep -- but why?

It was like a coalpit still standing, holding by the roots to the bbroken soil, and whose branches, like fine black paper cutings, showed distinctly opn the watery ceiling.
